Blue Plaque Unveiled for Lord Elwyn-Jones
On the 2nd September 2013 Michael Howard, the Rt. Hon. the Lord Howard of Lympne, officially unveiled a blue plaque on the premises of 132, Old Castle Road commemorating Lord Elwyn-Jones of Llanelli.
The plaque was erected by Llanelli Community Heritage, and sponsored by Nia Griffith, MP, in honour of Lord Elwyn-Jones. Lord Elwyn-Jones, a former student of Llanelli Grammar School, had a distinguished legal career which included the prosecution of Nazi war criminals at the Nuremberg Trials. He was Lord Chancellor from 1974-79. He was president of the Llanelli branch of the WEA (Workers' Educational Association) for a number of years.
Michael Howard, also a student at Llanelli Boys' Grammar School, followed Lord Elwyn-Jones into the legal profession and spent 16 years with him in chambers. Michael Howard was Home Secretary from 1993-97, and leader of the Conservative party in opposition from 2003-2005.
