Arthur Charles Mainwaring Bowen Founder of Arthritis Care Plaque Unveiling
On Thursday, 16th August the life and work of Pontyberem born "Waring" Bowen was celebrated with the unveiling of a Llanelli Community Heritage mini-panel at Pontyberem Miners' Memorial Hall. "Waring", as he was known, was the founder of the British Rheumatism Association, now Arthritis Care, soon to be merged with Arthritis Research.
Mrs. Helen Barbour Waring's widow and sponsor of the panel, had travelled from Torquay for the event and was accompanied by her daughter, Philippa. She spoke with great emotion and expressed her sincere thanks for the work of LCH in commemorating her husband's life and legacy.
Lyn John, our chairman, Judi Rhys, former CEO of Arthritis Care, and Mary Cowern, Wales Director of Arthritis Care spoke of Waring's invaluable contribution to the well-being and care of people living with arthritis in all its forms.
The event was attended by several of our members, along with Cllr. Deris Williams representing the local authority. Age Cymru Sir Gâr, Carmarthenshire 50+ Forum, Menter Cwm Gwendraeth and the Pontyberem Historical Society were also represented.
Tea, coffee and biscuits courtesy of Arthritis Care were served in the newly refurbished first floor function room.
Pontyberem Memorial Hall which has undergone extensive refurbishment of all its facilities including its magnificent concert hall will be fully open for business very soon and once again available for concerts, meetings and weddings.
