Steadman Davies MBE 1925 - 2010This Blue Plaque commemorates the birth place of Steadman Davies MBE, in Bwlch y Gwynt, Llanelli on 19th July 1925. Mr Davies tirelessly and selflessly served the people of this town for over 50 years both as a Martial Arts and Yoga teacher and in his everyday life, offering wise guidance, support and encouragement to all.In the early years of World War Two, Mr Davies was called up, and he served in the British Army in countries including Korea, China and India. It was during this time that he began to study Martial Arts and Yoga with Great Masters in these disciplines.
After demobilisation from the army, Mr Davies returned to Springfield Terrace, Bwlch y Gwynt. Here in 1958 Sanshirokwai Dojo had its humble beginnings as he began to teach Martial Arts from his home. By 1962, it was clear that he needed bigger premises and so a suitable one was found in Anne Street where he continued to teach Judo and Aikido for many years. In 1974, Sanshirokwai Dojo was relocated to Old Castle Road, a venue where Mr Davies taught Judo, Aikido, Yoga and Meditation until his passing in 2010, and where his legacy continues.
Over the years, Mr Davies trained many Welsh and British Judo Champions. He also received several awards, including the Torch Trophy Trust award in 1986 and the Kelly Evans Shield from Carmarthenshire Council in 2002 for his services to sport. In 2002, Mr Davies was awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours List in recognition for his services to Judo and the Martial Arts.
