n 1961 I was awarded a Thomas and Elizabeth Williams Scholarship by Carmarthenshire County Council. This enabled me to study full-time at a British university for two years for a research Masters degree. Much more recently, at a job interview one of the interviewers, having read my CV closely, asked who Thomas and Elizabeth Williams were. My middle name is Thomas and my surname Williams and the questioner wanted to know if I was related to Thomas and Elizabeth Williams. I was somewhat embarrassed to say I knew very little about these generous benefactors. I thought that they might have been Americans. Now, sixty years on since I was awarded the scholarship, I decided to find out who they were. Essentially, I wanted to express my gratitude publicly to these benefactors since my funded research degree launched my academic career...
